Career
Khulan was a student in 2005 when she was "discovered" by Guka Omarova, the casting director for Mongol, while standing in a visa line at the Chinese embassy in Ulaanbaatar. Casting for MONGOL was going from 2004 till 2005 and took place around the world, including Mongolia; Kazakhstan; Kyrgyzstan; Japan; China; Korea; Los Angeles; and the Russian regions of Tuva, Buryatia, Tatarstan, Bashkiria, Yakutia (aka Sakha), Volga, Ural, and Siberia, but with two weeks to go before the start of production, Bodrov and Omarova weren’t certain about their choices for Börte.. Guka returned to Mongolia, and phoned Bodrov a week later. Sergei Bodrov: “She said, ‘It looks like I found her, but you have to come and see.’ I flew in and met Khulan. She was a student, had never acted before. But she was really special, her face and her behaviour. So we decided to take a risk on a non-professional actress and cast her in the role of Börte. And Khulan was wonderful!”
Life
After casting in Ulaanbaatar Khulan arrived to Beijing for costume fitting and met with Naryn Igilik, Bodrov's Kazakh assistant. In 2007 they married. The couple's wedding and film's premiere were in the same day and they appear at the scene in wedding costumes. Khulan and Naryn now reside in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
